Clare Matthews
Clare lives north of Wellington where she creates her contemporary landscapes using a mix of acrylic, collage and oil pastels.
Her work is largely inspired by the natural environment…the light, the weather, the layers. She is interested in exaggerating the beauty and drama of the landscape through the imaginative use of colour, line and a variety of marks and shapes, with the desire to capture something special to draw the viewer in and hold them there.
She loves the constant dance with different media, adding, scraping back, scratching into, flooding with paint until the painting begins to suggest a natural direction. With patient progression, it begins to take form and this conversation continues until there is nothing left to add, at which point she invites the viewer to take up the thread.
She works from inside her head rather than photographs, preferring to allow the viewer to imbue the painting with their own sense of place or memory, and so strengthening their connection to it.
